“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
[Matthew 6:33 NIV]
Devotional
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, where He addressed the worries and anxieties that weigh on our hearts. The crowd listening to Him lived day by day, often unsure where their food or clothing would come from. Into that uncertainty, Jesus gave this gentle command and promise: focus on God’s kingdom first, and trust that He will provide what you need.
To “seek first” means making God the highest priority in our lives. It does not mean ignoring our daily responsibilities, but rather placing them in the right order. When we chase after God’s will, His righteousness, and His purposes, everything else finds its proper place. Our energy shifts from worry to trust, and from striving to resting in His care.
This promise is not about God giving us everything we want, but everything we truly need. He knows our hearts better than we do. By trusting Him first, we open the door to His provision, peace, and direction in every season of life.
Reflection
When you feel pulled in many directions, pause and ask: “Am I seeking His kingdom first?” Let today be a reminder that God already knows your needs and delights to care for you. Your part is to keep your eyes on Him.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the promise that when I seek Your kingdom first, You provide what I need. Help me to trust You more than I trust my own plans. Teach me to rest in Your care and to live each day with You at the center. Amen.
