“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
[James 4:8 NIV]
Devotional
This verse is both an invitation and a call to action. James reminds us that God is not far away, waiting for us to somehow prove ourselves before He will draw close. Instead, He invites us to come near, and promises His nearness in return. What a reassurance that the God of heaven responds to our seeking hearts.
But James also points to the condition of our hearts and hands. To come near to God means letting go of sin, hypocrisy, and divided loyalties. It is not about being perfect but about being willing to repent, to turn from what pulls us away, and to draw closer to the One who gives life.
Throughout Scripture, we see God moving toward His people when they seek Him. From the psalms of David to the prayers of the early church, God’s nearness has always been a refuge and a strength. He is the same today, ready to meet you when you choose Him above all else.
Reflection
Ask yourself today: what might be keeping me at a distance from God? As you bring those things to Him honestly, trust His promise that He will draw close, not with condemnation, but with love and renewal.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that when I come near to You, You come near to me. Help me to turn from anything that keeps me far from You, and purify my heart so that I may walk closely with You each day.
