You Are the Light

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

[Matthew 5:14 NIV]

Devotional

These words come from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, where He describes what life in His kingdom looks like. He had just spoken about being salt of the earth, and then He turns to this powerful identity statement. He does not say you might become light someday. He says you are the light of the world.

Light does not struggle to be noticed. It simply shines. In a dark room, even the smallest flame changes everything. As a follower of Christ, His light lives in you. Your kindness, integrity, compassion, and faith reflect Him in ways you may not even realize. You do not have to force influence. You simply walk faithfully with Him, and His light shines through you.

Jesus also reminds us that a city on a hill cannot be hidden. Your life has purpose. God has placed you where you are for a reason. In your home, workplace, friendships, and daily routines, you are positioned to bring hope and truth into ordinary moments. When you choose love over bitterness and faith over fear, you illuminate the path for others.

If you feel small or unnoticed today, remember this promise. The light within you is not your own. It is Christ in you. And His light is always enough to push back the darkness.

Reflection

Where has God placed you to shine right now? Ask Him to help you reflect His love in simple, faithful ways today. Your light matters more than you think.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me the light of the world. Help me reflect Your heart in all I do. Let my life shine in a way that draws others closer to You. Amen.
