You Are Already God’s Child

“Beloved, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”

[1 John 3:2 NIV]

Devotional

The apostle John begins with a tender word: “Beloved.” Before reminding us of who we will become, he reminds us of who we already are. Now we are children of God. Not someday. Not once we have it all together. Right now, through faith in Christ, you belong to Him. Your identity is settled even when your circumstances feel uncertain.

John also admits something honest. It does not yet appear what we shall be. There is mystery in our spiritual growth. We still struggle. We still fall short. We do not yet reflect Christ perfectly. But our present imperfections do not cancel our future transformation. God is not finished with you.

The promise stretches forward with hope. When Christ appears, we shall be like Him. One day, every trace of sin, doubt, and weakness will be gone. We will see Him clearly, and in seeing Him, we will be made fully whole. This is not wishful thinking. It is anchored in the certainty of Christ’s return and His faithful power to complete what He began in us.

So when you feel discouraged by how far you have to go, remember how secure you already are. You are God’s child now, and you are becoming something glorious.

Reflection

I may not see all that God is shaping in me, but I trust that He is at work. My identity as His child is secure, and my future is filled with hope.

Prayer

Father, thank You that I am Your child right now. Help me trust the work You are doing in me, even when I cannot see the full picture. Strengthen my heart to look forward to the day I will see You face to face. Amen.
