“Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.”
[Luke 6:21 NIV]
Devotional
In this verse, Jesus is speaking to His disciples during what is often called the Sermon on the Plain. He turns the world’s expectations upside down. Instead of praising the comfortable and carefree, He calls those who hunger and weep blessed. Why? Because their present pain is not the end of their story.
When Jesus speaks of hunger, He is not only referring to physical need, though He cares deeply about that. He is also speaking to spiritual longing. The ache for righteousness, the deep desire for things to be made right, the quiet yearning for God’s presence. If you feel that hunger today, it is not a sign of abandonment. It is evidence that your heart is alive and reaching for Him.
The same is true for weeping. Tears may fall in seasons of loss, disappointment, or waiting. Yet Jesus promises laughter ahead. God sees every tear, and He holds the future in His hands. The sorrow you experience now will one day give way to joy that is full and lasting.
This promise assures you that your current struggle is temporary, but God’s satisfaction and joy are certain. He does not overlook your need. He promises fulfillment.
Reflection
If I am hungry or hurting today, I am not forgotten. Jesus promises that my longing will be satisfied and my sorrow will turn into joy.
Prayer
Lord, You see my hunger and my tears. Thank You for promising that satisfaction and joy are coming. Help me to trust You in this season and to hold on to Your faithful word. Amen.
