“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 8:1 CSB)
Devotional
There’s a specific memory I still can’t think about without wincing. Something already repented of, already forgiven as far as I understand it, and it still shows up uninvited, dragging the old accusation back in with it like the case was never actually closed.
Condemnation is a legal word, a verdict, guilty as charged, sentence pending. Paul has just spent seven dense chapters wrestling honestly with sin’s grip on us, and this verse is where the argument lands. For those in Christ Jesus, that verdict has been permanently removed. Not reduced. Not under appeal. Removed. And notice the word now sitting right there in the sentence, present tense, not someday, not once we’ve proven ourselves worthy of it.
We tend to keep re-trying cases God already closed, quietly appointing ourselves prosecutor and judge over things Christ already paid for in full, replaying the same evidence long after the actual verdict came in. It is an exhausting habit, and most of us do it without even noticing we’ve reopened the file.
What changes when we take this seriously is what we do the next time the old accusation resurfaces. We get to answer it with this verse instead of re-litigating the case ourselves, not because the guilt never mattered, but because the sentence for it has already been served, by someone else, on our behalf.
God is not holding the file open somewhere, waiting for a better moment to bring it back up. There is no asterisk hiding at the end of no condemnation. He is close, and he has already ruled, and the ruling was in our favour.
Reflection
I can name the exact memory that still tries to drag an old verdict back into the present. I am realizing I have been the one keeping that case open, not God. I want to actually let this verse close the file instead of quietly reopening it every time the memory surfaces. The verdict was already given, and it was not guilty.
Prayer
Father, thank you that the condemnation we keep dragging back up was already dealt with in Christ. Forgive us for re-trying cases you already closed. Help us actually believe there is no asterisk on this promise. Let the old accusations lose their grip on us the way you have already declared they should.
