“Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child of her womb? Even if these forget, yet I will not forget you. Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me” (Isaiah 49:15–16 CSB).
Devotional
There is a hollow ache that comes when you feel forgotten by the world or even by those who were supposed to love you best. You might be navigating a season of quiet isolation where it seems your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling and your struggles are invisible to everyone around you. In these moments of loneliness, a subtle fear can take root; the fear that you are truly on your own and that your life has somehow slipped through the cracks of God’s attention.
The Lord addresses this deep-seated fear by appealing to the strongest human bond we know: the connection between a mother and her child. He asks if it is even possible for a mother to forget the infant at her breast. While we know that human love can sadly fail or falter because of our brokenness, God declares that his devotion to you is of a completely different order. Even if the most fundamental human relationships were to crumble, his commitment to you remains unshakable and constant.
To illustrate just how impossible it is for him to forget you, he uses the powerful imagery of a permanent mark. He has not merely written your name in a book or on a list; he has inscribed you onto the very palms of his hands. Every time he looks at his hands, he sees you. This is a vivid reminder that you are part of his very being and always in his line of sight. He is intimately aware of the “walls” of your life: the boundaries, the broken places, and the things you are trying to rebuild.
You do not have to shout to get his attention or perform to keep his interest. You are already at the centre of his gaze. When the silence of your current circumstances feels like abandonment, let this promise settle your heart. The Creator of the universe carries a permanent reminder of you with him at all times. You are cherished, you are seen, and you are absolutely unforgettable to the One who holds the whole world in those same scarred hands.
Reflection
I realize that I often equate God’s silence with his absence, but these verses remind me that I am always on his mind. It is incredibly humbling to think that my name is inscribed on his hands and that he is constantly mindful of my situation. I will choose to rest in the security of being truly known and loved today.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for the comforting assurance that you could never forget me. When I feel lonely or overlooked, please remind me that I am permanently held in your hands and always in your sight. I trust in your unwavering compassion and your constant presence in my life.
