“Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4 CSB)
Devotional
We live in a world that constantly encourages us to curate our own happiness and protect our own time. From a young age, we are taught that survival and success depend on how well we advocate for ourselves. It is easy to fall into the rhythm of viewing our neighbours, colleagues, and even our family members through the lens of how they affect our personal goals. When our focus narrows to the borders of our own needs, we often miss the profound beauty of the life God has called us to live.
The Father invites us into a different way of being, one that mirrors the very nature of His Son. This is not a call to neglect our well-being or ignore our responsibilities, but rather an invitation to expand the horizons of our hearts. When we lift our eyes from our own immediate concerns, we begin to see people as He sees them. We start to notice the quiet burdens others are carrying and the silent prayers for a helping hand. In this space, we find that our own anxieties often begin to fade as we pour out the love we have first received from Him.
Walking this out in our daily lives requires a gentle intentionality. It might look like pausing a busy schedule to truly listen to a friend or choosing to honour someone else’s preferences over our own comfort. As we practice this outward focus, we realise that we are never more like our Father than when we are selflessly serving those around us. He is the God who looked upon our brokenness and moved toward us with a heart of restoration, and He delights when we reflect that same grace to the world.
Reflection
I often find myself so preoccupied with my own to-do list that I treat the people around me as interruptions rather than opportunities to love. I want to ask the Father to soften my heart and help me notice the needs of others with the same urgency I feel for my own. I choose to believe that as I look out for my neighbour, the Lord is faithfully looking out for me.
Prayer
Father, thank You for the selfless way You care for every detail of our lives. We ask for the grace to step outside of our own interests today so that we can see and serve those You place in our path. Teach us how to love with a generous spirit that reflects Your heart to everyone we meet.
