Finding a Safe Place to Rest

“And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.” (1 John 4:16 CSB)

Devotional

We often treat love like a fragile glass ornament that might shatter if we handle it too roughly or a fickle guest who leaves the moment things get uncomfortable. We spend so much of our energy trying to earn a seat at the table, wondering if we have done enough to keep God interested in our lives. Yet, the heart of the Father offers us something far more stable than a temporary feeling. He offers us a permanent residence. To know His love is to realise that we are not just visiting a kindness; we are being invited to move in and unpack our bags for good.

Living in this kind of love changes the way we wake up in the morning. When we truly settle into the reality that God is love, the pressure to perform begins to fall away. We stop looking at our relationship with Him as a series of transactions and start seeing it as a constant, indwelling presence. He does not just give love as a gift from a distance; He gives Himself. This means that even in our quietest moments or our hardest failures, the foundation beneath our feet remains solid because His character never shifts.

As we remain in Him, our perspective on the world around us begins to soften and transform. We start to see others through the lens of the same grace that has become our home. This isn’t something we manufacture through sheer willpower or religious effort. Instead, it is the natural overflow of a life that has finally stopped running and started resting. When we realise we are fully known and deeply settled in His heart, we find the courage to let His love reach out through us to a world that is desperate for a place to belong.

Reflection

I realize that I often act as though God’s love is something I must chase rather than a place where I already live. I want to stop questioning His affection for me when I face difficulties and instead learn to trust His unchanging nature. Today, I will choose to rest in the quiet confidence that I am hidden in Him.

Prayer

Father, we thank You for being a steady home for our hearts when the world feels chaotic and uncertain. Help us to deeply understand that Your love is not just what You do, but who You are. We ask for the grace to remain in You today, letting Your presence guide our thoughts and our interactions with everyone we meet.
