He Speaks First

“Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3 CSB)

Devotional

Before this verse there is nothing. Formless, empty, dark. The kind of dark that has no edges, no reference points, no sense of which way is up. And God does not stand outside of that and wait for something to work with. He speaks into it.

That detail matters more than I think we realise. He did not speak after things improved. He did not wait for a little light to already exist before He called for more. The darkness was total, and His word was the first thing. That is the sequence: darkness first, then His voice, then light. Every time.

I have been in seasons where I genuinely could not see the next step. Where I kept waiting to feel some kind of internal signal that things were shifting, and nothing came. What this verse quietly does is reframe where we are supposed to be looking. The light does not come from inside us. It does not come from our circumstances slowly improving. It comes from Him speaking. And He has never once needed good conditions to do that.

There is something else here too. He said “let there be light” and there was light. No delay, no negotiation, no partial result. When God speaks, what He says becomes real. That same creative voice is the one that speaks over your life. Over the thing that feels formless and empty right now. He is not looking at your situation and wondering what He can do with it. He already knows what He is making.

You do not have to manufacture hope right now. You do not have to pretend the dark is not dark. But you can trust that the same God who spoke light into nothing is present in whatever you are walking through, and He is not silent.

Reflection

I notice how often I wait to feel hopeful before I trust that God is working. I want to let this verse turn that around today. He spoke before there was anything to work with, and that means my emptiness is not an obstacle to Him. I want to sit in that today instead of straining to see what I cannot see yet.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You have never needed good conditions to do something new. Speak into the places in our lives that feel dark and formless right now. Help us to trust Your voice more than our circumstances, and remind us that the light You call into being is already on its way. Amen.
