“For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.” (Romans 1:17 CSB)
Devotional
At some point, without really deciding to, a lot of us shift. Faith stops being the thing we are living from and starts being the thing we are trying to demonstrate. We know enough now. We have been around long enough. So we carry our theology carefully, we show up consistently, we say the right things, and underneath all of it there is this low-grade weariness that we do not really talk about. Because who wants to admit that after all this time, they are tired?
Paul’s phrase here is worth slowing down for: from faith to faith. Not from faith to knowledge. Not from faith to maturity, or discipline, or a more sophisticated version of Christianity. From faith to faith. The righteous, meaning people who are right with God, live by faith. Not lived by it once at the beginning and then moved on to something more advanced. Live. Present tense. Ongoing. The whole journey is faith, all the way through.
I find that either deeply relieving or quietly confronting, depending on the day. On the days I am doing well, it is relieving because it means I am not supposed to have outgrown needing God. On the harder days it is confronting because it exposes how much I have been trying to run on my own competence rather than genuine trust. Both responses are probably useful.
Here is what I think Paul is getting at. The righteousness of God, meaning the right standing before God that we need and cannot manufacture, is revealed in the gospel. It comes from outside us. It is not built up through our performance, it is received through faith. And it keeps being received that way. Every day. There is no point at which you have accumulated enough that you can coast. But there is also no point at which you have failed enough that the offer is off the table.
That is the thing about living by faith. It keeps us close. It means we keep coming back, keep depending, keep showing up not with our hands full of what we have achieved but open, ready to receive. That is not weakness. That is exactly what we were made for.
Reflection
I want to be honest about how much of my faith life has quietly shifted into performance without me noticing. I do not want to keep running on the fumes of what I already know. I want to come back to actual dependence today, the kind where I am genuinely leaning on God rather than leaning on my own understanding of Him. From faith to faith means there is always more, and I want to stay in that.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You never asked us to graduate from needing You. Forgive us for the ways we have quietly tried to. Pull us back into genuine trust today, the kind that keeps its hands open rather than clenched. Remind us that Your righteousness is a gift we receive, not a standard we maintain. Amen.
