Nobody talks much about the quiet seasons of obedience. The ones where you are making the right choices, mostly, and nothing dramatic is happening because of it. You are showing up, you are being faithful in the small things, you are trying to honour God in decisions nobody else even sees. And it is good. But it is also just, quietly, a lot. And somewhere in the back of your mind a question has started to form that you feel a little guilty even having: is this actually going anywhere?
That question is more honest than it is faithless. And I think God is less bothered by it than we are.
What stops me in this verse is the verb. The blessings will come and overtake you. Not trickle toward you. Not appear if you look hard enough. Overtake you. That is the language of something moving faster than you are, something that is going to catch up with you whether you are watching for it or not. The blessing is not waiting for you to arrive at some threshold of sufficient obedience. It is already in motion. God has already set it loose, and it is headed your way.
Now, I want to be careful here because this verse has been misused. It is not a transaction where obedience earns a specific material reward on a predictable timeline. The blessings Moses is describing are rich and varied and deeply relational, the flourishing that comes from being rightly aligned with God and His ways. Some of them are immediate. Some of them unfold over years. Some of them we will not fully see until eternity. But the direction of travel is clear. Obedience is never wasted. God does not forget faithful choices made in quiet rooms when nobody was watching.
The thing I keep coming back to is the posture this verse invites. We are not supposed to be straining toward blessing, white-knuckling our way through obedience hoping something eventually shows up. We are supposed to be walking with God, close and steady, and trusting that what He has promised is already moving. You do not have to chase it. It is coming to find you.
That is worth sitting with today. Especially if the faithful season you are in has felt long and unwitnessed and a little thankless. Keep going. Not because the reward is the point, but because the God who made the promise is faithful, and He does not lose track of a single step you have taken in His direction.
Reflection
I want to be honest about the weariness that has crept into my obedience lately, the part of me that has been keeping a quiet tally of what faithfulness has cost and wondering when something is going to shift. I do not want that weariness to harden into cynicism. I want to trust today that God sees every quiet choice I have made and that His blessing is not passive. It is already on its way. That is enough to keep going.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You do not ask us to chase what You have already promised to bring. Forgive us for the moments when faithful obedience has quietly curdled into performance or resentment. Renew our trust today. Remind us that You see every step taken in Your direction, even the ones nobody else noticed. Help us to keep walking, not to earn something, but because You are worth it. Amen.
