There is a category a lot of us put ourselves in without realising it. Not unsaved exactly. We believe. We are in. But there is this background sense that we are on thinner ice than other people, that our particular history or our particular failures or the particular distance we let grow between us and God means that while grace is real, it is maybe not quite as available to us as it is to someone who has not made the choices we have made. We never say it out loud. But we live from it constantly.
The writer of Hebrews wants to dismantle that completely.
He is able to save completely. That word completely in the Greek carries the sense of all the way, to the uttermost, to the fullest possible extent. Not mostly. Not sufficiently. Completely. Every part of you, every chapter of your story, every thing you did when you knew better and did it anyway, every slow drift, every dramatic failure, every shameful thing you have never told another person. All of it is inside the reach of what Jesus secured. There is no asterisk. There is no fine print carving out an exception for your specific situation.
And then the second half of this verse does something I did not expect the first time I really sat with it. It tells us what Jesus is doing right now. Not what He did. What He is doing. He always lives to intercede for them. At this moment, at the moment you are reading this, Jesus is alive before the Father speaking on your behalf. That is not a metaphor. That is not a historical statement about something that happened at the cross and is now finished. He is currently, actively, presently making intercession for you by name.
I do not know what to do with that except to let it be as big as it actually is. The Son of God, who has all authority in heaven and earth, is not silent about you. He is not watching from a distance to see if you get it together. He is speaking for you. Right now. That is your advocate. That is who is in your corner.
So the quiet verdict you have been carrying, the one that says you are too far, too much, too late, or just too complicated for grace to fully reach, that verdict does not hold. It was never true and it is not true now. Come to God through Him. That is the only condition. And He will do the rest, all the way, to the uttermost.
Reflection
I want to sit honestly with the places where I have been living as though grace applies to everyone except fully to me. I do not want to keep carrying a self-imposed sentence that Jesus already paid to remove. He is interceding for me right now, and I want to actually receive that today instead of just knowing it. That is the difference I am after, between information and something that actually changes how I walk through the day.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that You did not save us halfway and then leave us to manage the rest on our own. Thank You that You are alive and that You are speaking for us right now, in this moment, before the Father. Help us to receive the completeness of what You secured. Loosen the quiet verdicts we have pronounced on ourselves and remind us that Your intercession has not stopped. We come to God through You, and that is enough. Amen.
