The Inheritance Nobody Talks About

“A righteous person acts with integrity; his children who come after him will be happy.” (Proverbs 20:7 CSB)

Devotional

Most of us think about what we want to leave our kids. A good education. A stable home. Maybe some savings. We lie awake running those calculations. But this verse points to something quieter, something that doesn’t show up in a will, and it might be the most powerful thing we ever pass on.

Integrity. The way we actually live when nobody is watching. The way we handle money when it’s tight. The way we talk about people who aren’t in the room. The way we respond when we’ve been treated unfairly. Our kids are watching all of it, far more closely than we realise. They are not listening to our best Sunday morning version of ourselves. They are watching Tuesday afternoon.

And here’s what I love about this verse. It doesn’t say our children will be happy because we were perfect. It says a righteous person acts with integrity, and that consistency, that choosing to do the right thing day after day, quietly shapes the world our children inherit. Not because we performed for them, but because we genuinely walked with God. There is a difference, and they can tell.

I need this reminder as much as anyone. There are days when I cut corners in small ways and tell myself it doesn’t matter. But it does matter. Not because God is keeping score, but because the people closest to us are shaped by what we actually are, not what we say we are. The fruit of a life well-lived doesn’t always show up in our own lifetime. Sometimes it shows up in our children.

God is not asking us to be flawless. He is asking us to be real. To be people who are the same in private as we are in public. To let His righteousness work its way into the ordinary moments of our ordinary days. That kind of life is a gift. And apparently, it keeps giving long after we are gone.

Reflection

I want to leave something worth inheriting. I know there are areas where what I say and how I live don’t quite line up, and I feel that tension. I want to be the same person at home that I am at church. I want my children to look back and say that I was real.

Prayer

Father, we want to be people of integrity, not to earn anything, but because You are real and You are worth living for. Show us the places where we’ve been performing instead of actually walking with You. Let our lives be something worth passing on to the people who are watching us most closely. Amen.
