He Is Already Knocking, He Is Just Waiting on You

“See! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20 CSB)

Devotional

That knock is not coming from someone who has given up on you.

This verse gets used so often as a general invitation to salvation that it is easy to forget where it actually sits. Jesus is speaking to a church, people who already claimed to follow him, and he is describing them as lukewarm, comfortable, convinced they need nothing. That should sting a little, and I say that as someone who recognises the description more than I would like to. It is possible to have all the right language about faith and still have quietly shut the door on Jesus in the actual, practical parts of life.

But look at what he does with that. He does not break the door down. He does not walk away either. He stands there and knocks, patient, specific, waiting for an actual response. This is not a God pacing outside in frustration, tallying our failures. It is a God who wants in badly enough to keep knocking, and gentle enough to wait for us to open it ourselves.

And what he offers once the door opens is not a lecture. It is a meal. Eating together in that culture meant something close, unhurried, relational, the opposite of a formal inspection. Jesus is not asking to come in and audit your life. He is asking to sit down at your table the way a close friend would, in the middle of whatever is actually going on in your house.

I need this reminder as much as anyone. There are parts of my life I have quietly kept the door shut on, not out of rebellion exactly, just out of habit or distraction. This verse does not shame me for that. It just tells me he is still standing there, still knocking, still willing to come in and eat with me the moment I open the door.

Reflection

I can think of at least one area of my life where I have let the door stay shut out of habit rather than open defiance. I want to actually open it instead of assuming I already have. Jesus is not waiting to inspect me, he is waiting to sit down with me.

Prayer

Father, we confess there are doors in our lives we have quietly left shut, even while we still call ourselves yours. Thank you for not breaking those doors down but knocking, patiently, waiting for us to answer. Help us open whatever we have kept closed today. Come in and sit with us in the actual mess of our lives, not just the parts we have cleaned up for you.
