His Way Has Never Once Needed Fixing

“God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.” (2 Samuel 22:31 CSB)

Devotional

I have spent more hours than I want to admit trying to improve on God’s way, quietly convinced my version of wisdom might work a little better in my specific situation.

David writes this line near the end of a long song, one he wrote after God delivered him from enemies who had hunted him for years. This is not a theoretical statement about God’s character written from a comfortable chair. It comes out of a life that had actually tested whether God’s way holds up under pressure, and David’s conclusion, after everything, is not qualified. God, his way is perfect. Not mostly reliable. Not usually trustworthy. Perfect.

There is something remarkable about pairing that word with pure in the very next phrase. The word of the Lord is pure, meaning it has nothing false mixed into it, nothing that needs to be filtered out or taken with a grain of salt. In a world where almost everything comes with fine print, where even good advice usually needs some qualifying, David is saying God’s word carries none of that. What he says can simply be trusted, exactly as it is.

And then the verse lands somewhere personal. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him. Not a shield to the people who figured everything out perfectly first. A shield to the ones who ran to him for cover, which is really all any of us can do. That is worth sitting with. God’s perfection is not a standard we are being measured against and failing. It is a shelter we are being invited into.

I want to let that settle rather than rush past it. God’s way does not need my improvements. It never has. What it actually needs from me is trust, the kind that runs toward him rather than around him.

Reflection

I catch myself trying to fine-tune God’s way as if my version might work better for my particular situation. I want to stop editing what he says and start trusting it as it actually is. His way has never once needed my help to be perfect.

Prayer

Father, we confess we sometimes think we know better than your way, even when your track record is perfect. Thank you that your word needs nothing added and nothing filtered out. Be our shield today, the way you were David’s, as we run to you instead of around you. Help us trust what you have said exactly as you have said it.
