Almost none of us are living the exact life we planned five years ago.
Some of those detours were painful, jobs that fell through, relationships that ended, doors that closed right when we thought they were opening. Others turned out to be better than anything we could have mapped out ourselves. Solomon names this reality without any bitterness in his voice. Many plans are in a person’s heart. He does not say our planning is foolish or that we should stop doing it. He simply states what is true: we make plans, plenty of them, and then something bigger than our plans is always at work underneath them.
What strikes me is the word he uses for what God has instead. Not just a preference or a hope. A decree. That is the language of a king who actually has the authority to make something happen, not just wish it into being. Our plans are proposals. God’s purpose is the one thing in the whole equation guaranteed to hold.
I find this genuinely freeing rather than discouraging, and I want to be honest that it did not always feel that way to me. There was a season where I gripped my own plans so tightly that every deviation felt like loss. What this verse points to is something better than control. It points to a God whose purpose for us is not only more powerful than our plans, it is also more trustworthy than anything we could have engineered on our own.
That does not mean every closed door is automatically good news, or that grief over a lost plan is somehow wrong to feel. It means that underneath the disappointment, something is still moving, something with a king behind it rather than chance. Our plans matter. They are just not the final word.
Reflection
I have gripped certain plans so tightly that any change felt like the ground shifting under me. I want to hold my plans a little looser this week, trusting that what God is actually doing is bigger and more trustworthy than what I mapped out. His purpose prevailing is not a threat to my plans, it is better news than I usually let it be.
Prayer
Father, we make plans and hold onto them tightly, sometimes more tightly than we hold onto you. Thank you that your purpose for us is not fragile the way our plans are. Help us trust you especially when our plans do not go the way we expected. Remind us today that what you are doing is bigger and better than anything we could have mapped out ourselves.
