The Fruit Nobody Claps For

“My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.” (John 15:8 CSB)

Devotional

I sometimes wonder if the ordinary parts of my faith actually mean anything to God. Not the big moments, everyone notices those. I mean the quiet stuff. Choosing patience with my kids when I’m exhausted. Showing up to lead my small group on a week I’d rather be alone. Nobody claps for that. I’ve genuinely wondered if it registers at all.

This verse answers that more directly than I expected. My Father is glorified by this, Jesus says, that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples. Glorified. Not tolerated, not quietly accepted as adequate. Glorified. God actually delights in the ordinary fruit growing out of a life connected to him, the patience, the faithfulness, the small acts nobody sees.

I don’t think Jesus is talking about spectacular fruit here either. Fruit grows slowly, quietly, mostly unnoticed, on a branch that’s just staying attached to the vine. It’s not the branch performing. It’s the branch simply remaining where it’s supposed to be, and the growth happens because of what it’s connected to.

That changes how I want to measure my week. Not by what looked impressive, but by what actually grew, even the small, unglamorous things. Patience I didn’t have on my own. A hard conversation I had instead of avoiding. Showing up when I didn’t feel like it. Not because those things prove anything to God, but because they’re genuinely, actually his joy.

Reflection

I catch myself measuring my faith by what looks impressive instead of what’s actually growing quietly underneath. This verse tells me God isn’t unmoved by the small, unseen fruit, he’s glorified by it. I want to stop discounting the ordinary faithfulness in my week as if it doesn’t count.

Prayer

Father, we’re grateful that you’re not looking for a performance, you’re genuinely glorified by the ordinary fruit growing in us. Thank you for delighting in the small, unseen faithfulness we’re tempted to discount. Help us stay close to you this week and trust that whatever grows from that is exactly what brings you joy. We want to be your disciples in the quiet, ordinary moments too.
