A Victory You’re Not Still Waiting For

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Corinthians 15:57 CSB)

Devotional

What if the fight you think you’re still losing was already decided, in your favour, before you even woke up this morning? That question sounds almost too simple for whatever it is you are actually wrestling with, a pattern that keeps repeating, a fear that won’t loosen its grip, a grief that doesn’t seem to be moving. We live inside our struggles like the outcome is still genuinely uncertain.

Paul has just spent an entire chapter building toward this one exhale of a sentence. He has been arguing, carefully and at length, for the reality of the resurrection, and this verse is where all of that argument lands. He is not describing a feeling we are supposed to work up. He is naming a settled fact. Death, sin’s ultimate weapon, has already been defeated through Jesus. The victory he is thanking God for is not something still being fought over. It is something already given.

We forget this constantly. We brace for battles Christ has already won on our behalf, as if today’s specific struggle might be the one that finally proves the outcome was never actually secure. It rarely occurs to us mid-struggle that the war’s real ending has already been written, and it isn’t the one we’re afraid of.

What changes when we take this seriously is not that today’s struggle disappears. It is that we get to enter it differently, as people already living from a victory rather than people still fighting for a verdict. That is a real shift, even on an ordinary hard day.

This is genuinely worth stopping for. The God of the universe secured our victory himself and then simply gave it to us, through Jesus, not because we earned a single inch of it. That deserves more than a passing thanks. It deserves the kind of awe Paul clearly felt when he wrote it down.

Reflection

I notice how often I live like the outcome of my own struggles is still genuinely up for grabs, when this verse says otherwise. I want to let that settle deeper than a nice idea I nod along to on a good day. The victory was never something I was supposed to secure myself. I want to actually rest in that instead of just agreeing with it.

Prayer

Father, thank you for a victory we didn’t earn and couldn’t have won on our own. Forgive us for living like today’s struggle might still tip the outcome against us. Help us enter what we’re facing right now as people who already belong to you, not people still fighting to find out. Thank you for Jesus, and for a win that was never actually in doubt.
