“Now it is God who strengthens us together with you in Christ, and who has anointed us. He has also put his seal on us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a down payment.” (2 Corinthians 1:21-22 CSB)
Devotional
What actually is a down payment, and why would God describe himself giving us one? Paul stacks three images in this short passage that are worth slowing down for instead of reading past.
Anointed, in the ancient world, meant set apart and marked for a specific purpose, the way a king or a priest was anointed for their role. Sealed meant marked as owned and protected, the way a wax seal on a letter guaranteed its contents hadn’t been tampered with along the way. Down payment, or deposit, was an ordinary commercial term, a partial payment that guaranteed the rest was actually coming, not a token gesture but a legal promise of more to follow.
Let’s figure out together what it means that all three of these describe something God has already done, not something we’re still waiting to earn or qualify for. We are already marked for purpose, already sealed as belonging to him, already holding a guarantee, the Holy Spirit himself, that more is genuinely coming.
What changes is that our uncertainty about the future doesn’t have to unsettle our confidence in the present. The down payment isn’t proof we might get the rest eventually if things go well. It’s proof the rest is already promised, already underway, regardless of how uncertain the road ahead feels.
God does not leave us guessing whether he’s serious about us. He anoints, seals, and gives a down payment, three separate, concrete guarantees, because he wants us actually secure, not just vaguely hopeful.
Reflection
I tend to treat my security in God like something I have to keep re-earning rather than something already given three separate times over, in this one passage alone. I want to actually rest in being marked, sealed, and guaranteed rather than constantly checking whether it’s still true. This verse says it already is. I want to believe that more than I currently do.
Prayer
Father, thank you for anointing us, sealing us, and giving us your Spirit as a guarantee of what’s still coming. Forgive us for treating our security in you like something uncertain. Help us actually rest in what you have already secured rather than constantly checking whether it’s real. Thank you for wanting us this genuinely secure.
