Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

“Keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2 CSB).

Devotional

Life often feels like a long distance race where the finish line seems to keep moving further away. When you are bone-tired and your spirit feels heavy, it is easy to let your gaze drift toward the obstacles at your feet or the miles you have already travelled. This weariness can make the smallest task feel like a mountain. You might feel as though you are running on empty, wondering if you have the strength to take even one more step.

The writer of Hebrews understands this deep exhaustion and offers a simple yet profound shift in perspective. Instead of focusing on your own flagging energy or the difficulty of the path, you are invited to fix your eyes on Jesus. He is the one who started this journey in you, and he is the one who will see it through to completion. He does not just watch from the sidelines; he has already run the race and knows exactly where the road gets steep.

Jesus endured the ultimate hardship not by sheer willpower, but by looking ahead to the joy of being reunited with the Father and bringing us with him. When you feel drained, remember that his endurance was fuelled by love for you. He looked past the immediate pain of the cross to the eternal glory that followed. This same Jesus now sits in the place of highest honour, interceding for you and offering the grace you need to keep moving forward.

Turning your attention toward Christ does not make the challenges disappear, but it changes how you carry them. When he is your focal point, his strength begins to supplement your weakness. You no longer have to manufacture your own perseverance. Take a deep breath today and release the pressure to be perfect or tireless. Look at him, trust his finished work, and allow his steady presence to sustain you through this season of your journey.

Reflection

I realize that I often spend more time looking at my problems than I do looking at my Saviour. My heart feels lighter when I remember that Jesus has already paved the way through every trial I face. I will choose to rest in his completed work today rather than relying on my own limited strength.

Prayer

Lord, please help me to turn my eyes away from my distractions and fix them firmly on you. I am tired and I need your joy to be my strength as I navigate this day. Thank you for being the author of my faith and for promising to walk with me until the very end.
