The Nearness of the Brokenhearted

“The LORD is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18 CSB).

Devotional

There is a hollow, heavy silence that follows a great loss or a deep disappointment. You might feel as though you are moving through the world behind a pane of glass, watching life continue for everyone else while you remain trapped in your own private winter. This kind of exhaustion is not just a lack of sleep; it is a profound soul-weariness that comes from carrying a heart that feels like it has shattered into a thousand jagged pieces. It is deeply lonely to feel that your pain has made you invisible or that your brokenness has somehow distanced you from the heart of God.

God understands the crushing weight of a spirit that has run out of hope. He knows that when you are at your lowest, you don’t need a lecture or a list of things to do; you simply need to know that you are not alone in the dark. In this promise, He reveals that He does His most intimate work in the wreckage of our lives. He does not stand at a distance waiting for you to pull yourself together; instead, He draws closer to you in your brokenness than at any other time.

His nearness is not a passive observation but a healing presence that acts as a balm for your deepest wounds. To be crushed in spirit is to feel as though the very breath has been squeezed out of you by the pressures of life, yet it is in this exact moment that God promises to save. He is the expert at gathering up the fragments of a life and breathing new purpose into them. You do not have to hide your tears or pretend to be stronger than you are to get His attention.

Today, you can allow yourself the space to be exactly where you are. You do not have to find the energy to climb up to God; He has already descended to be with you. Lean into the comfort of His presence and trust that He is tenderly holding the pieces of your heart together. You are seen in your sorrow, you are loved in your weakness, and you are being held by a Saviour who is intimately acquainted with grief and is committed to your restoration.

Reflection

I often feel like I have to hide my sadness or my struggles because I don’t want to be a burden to others or even to God. I am realizing that my brokenness is actually the place where I can experience God’s presence most deeply. I choose to stop running from my pain today and instead invite the Lord to be near me in the midst of it.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being near to me when my heart is breaking and for saving me when I feel completely crushed. Please help me to feel Your presence in the quiet moments of my grief and to trust that You are working to heal my wounds. I rest in the knowledge that You will never leave me alone in my struggle.
