Peace That Stays

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful” (John 14:27 CSB).

Devotional

There are moments when anxiety feels like a physical weight, pressing down on your chest and making it difficult to breathe. You may be facing a situation that feels completely out of your control, or perhaps a quiet, nagging fear about the future has taken root in your mind. This kind of inner turmoil is exhausting, leaving you feeling vulnerable and unsettled. It is in these very moments of trembling that the Lord draws near to offer a comfort that the world simply cannot replicate.

The peace Jesus speaks of is not merely the absence of conflict or the resolution of a difficult circumstance. The world offers a fragile peace that depends on everything going right, but the peace of Christ remains steady even when everything goes wrong. It is a gift he has already left for you, a permanent inheritance that belongs to you because you belong to him. He does not give tentatively or with strings attached; he gives out of the abundance of his own character.

When Jesus told his disciples not to let their hearts be troubled, he was speaking to men who were about to face the most confusing and terrifying nights of their lives. He knew the storm was coming, yet he promised a stillness that exists beneath the waves. This peace is a person, and his name is Jesus. It is the quiet assurance that you are held by a sovereign God who is not surprised by your circumstances and who will not let you go.

You do not have to work harder to achieve this tranquility or wait for your life to settle down before you can experience it. You can simply receive it. Even while the situation remains unchanged, you can invite the Holy Spirit to steady your heart and silence the fearful thoughts that keep you awake. Trust that the peace he provides is sturdier than your problems and deep enough to carry you through any shadow.

Reflection

I recognize that I often seek peace in a change of circumstances rather than in the presence of Jesus. I am learning to acknowledge my fears without letting them take the lead in my life. Today, I will lean into the quiet strength that Christ provides, trusting that his peace is enough for my troubled heart.

Prayer

Lord, I bring my racing thoughts and my fearful heart to you and ask for the gift of your supernatural peace. Help me to stop striving for a security that the world cannot give and instead rest in the assurance of your love. I choose to trust you with the things I cannot control, knowing you are with me.
