The Courage to Face the Shadow

“Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10 CSB).

Devotional

There are moments when the air feels heavy with the anticipation of a coming storm. You may be standing on the threshold of a difficult season, feeling the cold chill of fear as you look at the challenges ahead. This kind of dread is exhausting; it drains your energy before the battle has even begun. When you feel targeted by circumstances or sense that trial is inevitable, the instinct is often to shrink back or look for an escape route that does not exist.

Jesus does not offer the church in Smyrna a way out of the trial, but he offers something far more substantial: his presence and a clear perspective. He acknowledges the reality of the suffering and the source of the testing, removing the element of surprise that often fuels our deepest anxieties. By telling them not to be afraid of what is coming, he is reminding them that the duration of the affliction is limited. In the economy of eternity, even a intense “ten days” of trial has a definitive end date.

The call to be faithful to the point of death is a call to a courage that is not based on our own stamina, but on the character of the One who has already conquered death. He is the First and the Last, the one who died and came to life again. Because he holds the keys to the future, you do not have to be paralyzed by the threats of the present. He sees your struggle and he recognizes your endurance. Your faithfulness in the dark is never wasted; it is seen and valued by the King of kings.

At the end of the trial lies the crown of life. This is not a reward you have to earn through perfect bravery, but a gift promised to those who simply hold onto him through the shadow. When you feel as though you are at your breaking point, remember that the trial is temporary but the life he gives is eternal. You can face the coming days with a steady heart, knowing that your life is secure in the hands of the One who has already won the ultimate victory on your behalf.

Reflection

I realize that I often spend more time fearing the “what ifs” of the future than I do trusting the “I am” of the present. Even when I know a difficult season is coming, I want to choose faithfulness over fear. I will hold onto the promise of the crown of life, trusting that God is with me through every minute of the test.

Prayer

Lord, please quiet the fear in my heart as I face the trials and pressures of this life. Help me to remain faithful to you, even when the path is steep and the shadows are long. Thank you for the promise of eternal life and for the strength you provide to endure until the very end.
