A Rebuilding That Looks Smaller

“The final glory of this house will be greater than the first,” says the Lord of Armies. “I will provide peace in this place” — this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. (Haggai 2:9 CSB)

Devotional

Nobody throws a parade for a rebuilding project that looks smaller than what used to be there. Whatever we’re piecing back together after a hard season, a career, our health, a friendship, a church, it rarely matches the glory of the version we remember, and that comparison stings more than we’d like to admit.

The people this verse was written to knew that sting personally. They had returned from exile to rebuild the temple with far fewer resources than Solomon ever had, and some of the older generation, who remembered the original in all its glory, wept when they saw how modest the new foundation looked. Into that discouragement, God speaks through Haggai and makes an audacious promise. This humbler, smaller-looking house will actually carry greater glory than the first one did.

We do the same thing they did, quietly measuring our current rebuilding against someone else’s finished glory, or our own past, some earlier version of ourselves that felt more impressive, more put together, more whole. That comparison can talk us out of showing up for what is actually in front of us right now.

God is not threatened or disappointed by modest beginnings. He is not weighing our rebuilding against anyone’s glory days, including our own. He has already decided what he is going to do with it, and he calls it greater, not despite how small it looks, but through it.

He provides peace in exactly the place that still feels unfinished and unimpressive, close and present in the modest middle of the rebuilding, not waiting for it to look glorious before he shows up in it.

Reflection

I know exactly what I’ve been quietly comparing my current season to, and I can see now how much of my discouragement comes from that comparison rather than from the season itself. I want to stop measuring what I’m rebuilding against what used to be. If God can call a modest foundation the site of greater glory, I want to trust him with what feels small right now too.

Prayer

Father, thank you that you are not disappointed by what looks small or unfinished to us. Forgive us for measuring what we’re rebuilding against a glory we remember instead of trusting what you’re actually doing now. Meet us in the modest middle of this, the way you met your people rebuilding after exile. Give us peace right here, not only once it looks impressive again.
