Understanding Isn’t Trust’s Job

“The one who understands a matter finds success, and the one who trusts in the Lord will be happy.” (Proverbs 16:20 CSB)

Devotional

Have you ever met someone who understood a lot and still seemed miserable? Maybe it was you. All the research done, the plan made, the situation thoroughly understood, and still lying awake anxious anyway. Understanding a matter and trusting the Lord turn out not to be the same skill, even though we tend to treat them like they are.

Let’s figure out together why Solomon separates these two things in the same short verse. Understanding leads to success, that part is just practically true, competence really does pay off. But happiness, real settledness, is tied to something else entirely: trusting the Lord. Understanding gets us a workable plan. Trust gets us a quiet heart while we’re actually living inside that plan, especially the parts we couldn’t fully understand or control no matter how hard we tried.

We tend to assume that if we just understood more, planned better, researched harder, the anxiety would finally settle down. Sometimes it genuinely helps. But most of us have had a season where we understood a situation with total clarity and were still miserable inside it, because understanding was never actually built to do trust’s job.

Practically, this means asking a different question when the anxiety shows up. Not only do I understand this enough, but am I trusting God inside what I do and don’t understand. Those are two separate tasks, and only one of them was ever meant to carry our peace.

God is not withholding wisdom from us. He genuinely wants us to understand what we can. But he also knows understanding was never going to be enough to make us happy on its own, so he offers himself as the actual resting place, close enough to trust even in what we can’t fully work out.

Reflection

I can think of a situation right now where I have done all the understanding I can and I am still anxious, which tells me the missing piece was never more information. I keep reaching for one more fact, one more angle, hoping it will finally settle things. I want to notice when I’ve crossed from genuinely needing to understand into avoiding the harder work of trusting. Trust feels less controllable than research, and maybe that’s exactly the point.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the understanding you give us, and for being patient with how much we still don’t grasp. Forgive us for treating more information like it could do what only trust in you can do. Would you settle what understanding alone has never been able to settle in us. Teach us to trust you specifically in the parts we cannot work out.
