“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10 CSB).
Devotional
There are days when you look in the mirror or examine your life and feel like a collection of broken pieces and unfinished projects. When you are exhausted by your own perceived inadequacies, it is easy to believe the lie that you are a mistake or a disappointment to God. You might feel as though you have no purpose, or that your mistakes have permanently disqualified you from doing anything meaningful. This sense of worthlessness is a heavy burden that saps your joy and leaves you feeling discarded and invisible.
The apostle Paul counters this feeling of insignificance with a stunning declaration of your true identity. He uses the word workmanship, which in the original language carries the idea of a masterpiece or a poem. You are not a mass produced object or a byproduct of chance. You are a handcrafted work of art, intentionally designed by the Creator of the universe. Every part of your personality, your gifts, and even your journey has been shaped by his skilled hands.
This creative work happened in Christ Jesus, meaning your value is securely tied to his life, not your own performance. You do not have to strive to become a masterpiece; you already are one because of the Artist who made you. He has also prepared a specific path of good works for you to walk in. These are not heavy burdens to earn his love, but natural expressions of the life he has put within you. He has already gone ahead of you, arranging opportunities for you to reflect his goodness to the world.
Knowing that you are his workmanship allows you to rest from the exhausting effort of trying to prove your worth. You can trust the Artist even when the current chapter of your life feels messy or incomplete. A masterpiece often looks like a disaster in the middle of the process, but the Sculptor knows exactly what he is doing. Today, you can step forward with confidence, knowing that you were created with intention, loved with passion, and called to a purpose that was prepared just for you.
Reflection
I realize that I have been viewing myself as a failure rather than as God’s masterpiece. It changes everything to know that he has already prepared the good things he wants me to do today. I will stop trying to manufacture my own value and instead trust the hands of the One who is still shaping my life.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for creating me with such intentionality and for calling me your workmanship. Please help me to see myself through your eyes and to walk in the good works you have prepared for me. I trust your creative process and rest in the knowledge that I am your cherished work of art.
