“The people said to Joshua, ‘We will worship the LORD our God and obey him’” (Joshua 24:24 CSB).
Devotional
Pan and I remember the years when our three girls were little as a blur of beautiful but exhausting chaos. Balancing full-time work, managing a busy household, and trying to keep up with the endless daily needs of small children often left us completely depleted by the time evening arrived. In the middle of that intense busyness, we found that our good intentions were simply not enough. Sadly, it was usually our commitments to God that took a beating first, quietly pushed aside by the immediate demands of laundry, meal prep, and office deadlines.
The Israelites stood before Joshua at a similar crossroads of transition and competing priorities. After years of wandering, they were finally settling into a new land filled with conflicting cultures and countless new responsibilities. Joshua challenged them to stop wavering and make a definitive choice about who they would serve. Their response was not a vague promise to try a little harder when their schedules eventually cleared up. It was a clear, unified declaration that they would worship the Lord and obey His voice.
In our own lives, faith often begins as a general agreement with God’s principles. We want His blessings, and we genuinely desire to follow Him. Yet without a firm, daily decision, our spiritual lives can easily drift under the heavy weight of our routines. It is like trying to keep a garden completely free of weeds by only dealing with them when we happen to have spare time. Eventually, the overgrowth takes over. True commitment requires a deliberate choice to prioritize our faith, even when we are exhausted.
God invites us to move beyond casual agreement and step into intentional obedience. He does not demand perfection from us, but He does ask for our complete allegiance. When we make the conscious choice to worship Him and obey His direction, our priorities shift. Our daily decisions, how we spend our limited time, and the way we love our families begin to reflect the reality of His lordship in our lives.
Reflection
I need to evaluate where my faith is resting on good intentions rather than true commitment. I often allow the busyness of my schedule and the demands of daily life to dictate my spiritual priorities. I will make a deliberate choice today to actively worship God and obey His guidance, regardless of how tired I might feel.
Prayer
Lord, we confess that we often settle for good intentions instead of genuine obedience. We easily let the exhausting busyness of our days push our commitment to You aside. Help us to make a firm, daily decision to follow You, and give us the strength to faithfully worship You in everything we do.
