The Great Exchange

“He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21 CSB)

Devotional

Most of us spend our lives trying to balance an invisible ledger, hoping our good deeds will eventually outweigh our failures. We carry the weight of every mistake like a heavy stone in a backpack, convinced that we must somehow earn our way back into the Father’s good graces. This constant striving creates a barrier of shame that keeps us from running to Him with the confidence of a child. We fear that if He saw the full extent of our mess, He would surely turn away in disappointment.

But the Father did something so radical it defies human logic. He took the perfect, stainless life of His Son and wrapped it in the very sins that once defined us. On the cross, Jesus was not just punished for our mistakes; He took our place in the fullest sense. He shouldered the weight of our guilt, our shame, and our separation so that the ledger could be cleared once and for all. This was not a business transaction but a profound act of love designed to bring us home.

Now, when the Father looks at us, He no longer sees the failures we try so hard to hide. He sees the radiant righteousness of Christ. This is our new identity, and it is not something we can lose through a bad day or a moment of weakness. We are invited to step out of the shadows of performance and into the light of His favour. Our standing with Him is secure because it is based entirely on what Jesus has already finished, not on what we are still trying to prove.

This truth changes the way we wake up in the morning. Instead of living to get God to love us, we live because He already does. We can face our flaws with honesty because they no longer have the power to condemn us. When we realize we are clothed in the righteousness of God, our hearts are finally free to love others without the need for their approval. We are no longer defined by our past, but by the perfect life of the One who gave everything to call us His own.

Reflection

I often find myself trying to earn the love that God has already given me freely. I need to stop looking at my own performance and start gazing at the perfection of Christ that now covers me. Today, I will choose to believe that I am truly right with God, regardless of how I feel or what I have done.

Prayer

Father, we thank You for the incredible sacrifice of Your Son that made this exchange possible. We ask for the grace to stop striving and to finally rest in the righteousness You have credited to us. Help us to live today as people who are fully loved, fully forgiven, and completely secure in Your presence.
